It Takes a Big Heart to Help Shape Little Minds

Bully Prevention Month                                                                  October 2018

As we focus our students on THE LYNX WAY, it is our hope that there will be a clear understanding and expectation of Responsible, Respectful, Safe and Kind Behaviors. We emphasize daily the positive behaviors that we would like to see in our students.

It is Helpful for Us to Remember the Facts we Know about Bullying

What IS Bullying:                 Someone more powerful or having influence

                                                 Being Aggressive towards Someone

                                                 On a Repeated Basis

                                                 Deliberate and Intentional Aggressive Behaviors

What IS NOT Bullying:        Not all Aggressive or Mean Acts are Bully Behavior

Not a one-time “bad choice” incident

Not calling someone a name or excluding them

Not all negative behaviors are Bullying

We encourage the students to resolve conflicts by using “Kelso’s Choices” which consists of a Wheel of Nine Different Choices Including:

Walk Away, Go to Another Game, Ignore It, Talk It Out,

Apologize, Make a Deal, Talk to Out, Tell Them to Stop,

                                                                         Share and Take Turns.

We also encourage students in the practice of using “The Golden Rule” as taught in bully prevention & resolution programs.  When confronted with someone who is mean:

  1. Stay Calm                          2) Treat Them Like A Friend

This keeps the situation from escalating and often is successful at taking power away from the bully while empowering the student to manage difficult situations.  Teaching our children to be strong and resilient is a wonderful benefit to provide them with life-long skills of dealing with difficult people.
